What to buy
New Zealand offers a huge variety of shopping from arts and
craft markets, galleries and museum shops to exclusive designer
stores. For traditional New Zealand souvenirs look for examples
of superb Maori carvings in wood, bone and greenstone (jade).
You can also find jewellery and ornaments made from the
iridescent paua shell (abalone), revered by Maori for centuries.
New Zealand potters have been recognised as among the world's
finest ceramicists and today many fine artisans are also working
in stone, wood, glass and metals.
Nelson, Coromandel, Bay of Islands and Whangerei
are noted craft centres where people can watch and learn as
well as buy from local craftspeople.
New Zealand's vast wool industry makes it possible to find
wonderful hand-knitted wool sweaters, beautiful
 wall hangings and homespun yarns, and you won't find better -
or better priced - sheepskins anywhere in the world.
 You can also take home tasty mementoes like honey, wine,
kiwifruit products and chocolates.

Top labels such as Benneton, Laura Ashley, Esprit and Armani
are available in boutique stores in the main city areas.
Shop hours
All shops and businesses are open 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to
Friday, as a minimum. Most stores also open Saturdays between
10. 00 am and 1.00 pm or later, and some also open on Sundays.
In resorts you will find most stores also open in the
evenings. Banks are closed at weekends.

Tax - Goods and Services
All goods and services in New Zealand are subject to a 12.5
per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST), included in the
displayed price. Visitors cannot claim refunds on this tax, but
GSTis not charged on either the goods or the freight by a
supplier exporting an item to a visitor's home address.
