Just North of Whangarei you'll see this picturesque
setting on the main highway north....
they're called the Hikurangi Lime Rocks.
.

These rocks have been the playground for local children for as
long as there have been children in the area. The top rock is
fondly known as the Balancing Rock and with every
generation that's climbed up on it there's been those who has
been going to be the "one" to knock it down.
It still sits firmly on it's spot!

Dargaville
West of Whangarei is the small rural town of Dargaville which is
often the over-looked mecca of the North. It boasts beautiful
beaches, the forest housing the tallest Kauri tree in NZ,
a beautiful lake and one of the nicest drives any visitor
could wish to take in our area.

Tane Mahuta.....one of Waipoua Forests largest trees, the
"God of the Forest" is estimated to be 1200 years old, with a
girth of 13.77m and a total height of 51.51 meters.
There's a pathed walk from the parking area in to this
site and then carries on through native bush and exits
this at another part of the car park.

..Kai Iwi Lakes

Kai-Iwi Lakes are further on from the Waipoua Forest. This is a
haven for those who enjoy pleasure boating and water skiing.
Schools, youth groups and the like go there for camping
and recreation as well as many of the water sporting clubs
who use the idillic area for their chosen activities

Whananaki Coast Line

On the East coast of Whangarei we have a wonderful
variety of beaches. This pic shows the Whananaki Coast Line
which has a number of easily accessible beaches that are well
known for all the fun beach things thatare an accepted
way of life in NZ. The fishing here is superb.

Shown here is one of the privately owned camping grounds,
set in the water-front area of their farmland....
camps such as these are dotted all through NZ and offer
campers all the necessary things they require for
a good camping holiday

Whangarei Falls
.

The Whangarei Falls is a lovely spot to stop off at and enjoy
the views and maybe take a dip in the refreshingly cool clear
water at the top, or you can join some of the brave and hearty
in a jump over the falls! (not entirely recommended!)
